Hans-Gert Pöttering welcomes the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in Cyprus
The President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, today welcomed the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the Cyprus House of Representatives.
"Coming after the Irish Referendum, the approval by a big majority of the Members of the Cyprus House of Representatives is a very positive signal that the Lisbon Treaty is in Europe's vital interest."
"Twenty Member States of the European Union have now ratified the Treaty. Ratification should go on and all Member States should continue to express their positions on the Treaty by the end of this year. The aim is that the Treaty will have entered into force in time for the European Parliament elections in June 2009".
"I am particularly pleased that approval in Cyprus was achieved on the basis of a wide political consensus, including both parties in Government and opposition"

Hans-Gert Pöttering begrüßt Ratifizierung des Vertrags von Lissabon in Zypern
Der Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments, Hans-Gert Pöttering, hat die Ratifizierung des Vertrags von Lissabon durch das zypriotische Repräsentantenhaus begrüsst.
"Nach dem irischen Referendum ist die Zustimmung durch eine große Mehrheit der Mitglieder des zypriotischen Repräsentantenhauses ein äußerst positives Signal dafür, dass der Vertrag von Lissabon im lebenswichtigen Interesse Europas liegt."
"Jetzt haben zwanzig Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union den Vertrag ratifiziert. Der Ratifizierungsprozess sollte fortgeführt werden und alle Mitgliedstaaten sollten bis Ende dieses Jahres ihren Standpunkt zu dem Vertrag geäußert haben. Ziel ist ein Inkrafttreten des Vertrags rechtzeitig zu den im Juni 2009 stattfindenden Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament."
"Besonders freut mich, dass die Annahme in Zypern mit einer sehr breiten politischen Übereinstimmung erfolgt ist, einschließlich beider Parteien in der Regierung und in der Opposition."
