PŘEDSEDA EVROPSKÉHO PARLAMENTU H.G. PÖTTERING UVÍTAL OTEVŘENÍ ULICE LEDRA V NIKÓSII
Ve svém prohlášení označuje H.G. Pöttering otevření ulice Ledra v hlavním městě Kypru za první opravdové a viditelné přiblížení mezi dvěma komunitami. Doufá, že tento krok povede k úspěchům v překonávání rozdělení Kypru. Hans-Gert Pöttering povzbudil kyperského prezidenta a vůdce kyperských Turků k pokračování jejich úsilí k vyřešení zbývajících problémů. Předseda EP vyjádřil zároveň politování nad tím, že turecké jednotky ještě nebyly staženy ze svých pozic v Ledře a vyzval tureckou vládu, aby usnadnila konstruktivní cestou znovuzahájení jednání mezi oběma komunitami.
Ulice Ledra je nákupní třída v samém srdci Nikósie, která byla uzavřena od roku 1963. Přechod byl otevřen 3.dubna kyperskými Turky a Řeky. Text prohlášení v angličtině naleznete v příloze

President Pöttering welcomes the opening of Ledra Street in Nicosia
The President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering welcomed the opening of Ledra Street in Nicosia and made the following statement:
"I welcome this first step of a real and visible approach between the two communities on Cyprus. I hope that it will lead to many other steps that will improve the daily life of the citizens of both communities and that it will finally lead to Cyprus being an undivided Member State".
President Pöttering encouraged the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community to continue their efforts, which started now so successfully, for the settling of all outstanding questions.
The President regretted that the Turkish troops had not yet withdrawn from their positions at Ledra Street and called upon the Turkish government to facilitate in constructive way the relaunched negotiations between the two communities
Ledra Street is a shopping street in the heart of Nicosia that has been closed since 1963. A check point was opened this morning by Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The opening of this crossing point is an important and symbolic step tearing down a potent symbol of Cyprus's partition.
